OEM or ODM? Why More and More Brands No Longer Focus Only on Price, but Choose “Development-Oriented Manufacturers”

Over the past decade, many buyers searching for mobile phone case OEM/ODM manufacturers followed a very consistent logic: whoever offered the lowest price and the fastest lead time would be prioritized for cooperation. However, the industry is now undergoing a clear shift—brands are increasingly willing to pay for “development capability” rather than only “production capacity.”

The reason is straightforward.

The OEM model solves the problem of “you provide the design, I manufacture.” The ODM model, however, addresses a deeper need: “you provide the direction, I turn it into a finished product.” In today’s highly competitive consumer electronics market, the latter is becoming a key driver of brand growth.

Data shows that product homogenization in the phone case industry is intensifying. Traditional factories often remain at the basic production stage: clients provide files, and factories replicate them. The final products lack differentiation and are easily trapped in price competition. In contrast, manufacturers with strong ODM capabilities act more like product co-creation partners—they participate in structural optimization, process selection, material adaptation, and even proactively prevent mass production risks.

Take Shenzhen Boer Epoxy Co.,Ltd (aikusu) as an example. Its competitiveness is not limited to manufacturing, but lies in a complete “development + manufacturing” system. From mold development, epoxy resin craftsmanship, heat transfer printing, UV printing, to structural engineering support, it forms an integrated production chain. For brand owners, this means products are not just “made,” but are “more likely to sell.”

Especially in the mid-to-high-end customization market, details often determine repurchase rates. Whether a phone case is resistant to yellowing, whether the print is scratch-resistant, whether edges crack after drops, or whether button feedback feels precise—these are not simple production issues, but engineering capability issues. Manufacturers with 20+ patents, in-house laboratories, SGS drop-test capabilities, and ISO 90001 certification systems are more likely to identify risks early in the development stage, rather than shifting after-sales costs to clients after mass production.

Of course, not all suppliers need ODM capabilities. For standardized low-cost products, some OEM factories still have advantages in cost control and large-volume orders. Regional suppliers may also be more flexible for small-batch fast delivery. However, once a brand enters a competitive phase and requires differentiation, high quality, and stable repeat purchases, pure OEM manufacturing is no longer sufficient to build a lasting competitive moat.

Therefore, the real question is not:

“Which OEM factory is the cheapest?”

But rather:

“Which manufacturer can help me continuously launch competitive products?”

The winners of the future phone case industry will not necessarily be the largest manufacturers, but the ODM partners who best understand brand needs.
